Creativity

“It is time to explain myself…let us stand up.”
Walt Whitman

creativity (n) – the quality of being creative; the ability to create.

We tend to think, in this culture, that creativity is about the production of Art.  Though some people have achieved eminence in their creative expression, creativity is not just about being eminent.

eminent (adj.) – standing out so as to be readily seen or noticed; prominent; celebrated, revered, memorable, high-reaching, projecting, standing out.

This is not to say that eminence is to be reviled – quite the contrary.  I seek to be an eminent poet.  But my poetry is an expression of a deeper creative aspect of myself that is not satisfied merely by the state of eminence.  And my poetry is only one small part of my creative voice.  Creativity is how I live my life.

How do I express myself?  I paint my living room green and purple and the adjoining room orange because those colors make me feel strong and connected to my source.  And yes, people stop and comment, then smile and say, “This looks like Virginia, feels like Virginia.”  And I know I’ve created something good.

I pick and can fresh organic tomatoes so that my Italian sauces in January are vital and satisfying.  I really hear the underlying substance of a friend or client who is telling me about a life scenario. I make my husband laugh.

Creativity is a state of being. It’s in everyday life, and it’s about how we live our life.

A Writer’s Place is a place of everyday or immanent creativity.

immanent (adj.) – remaining or operating within a domain of reality; inherent; exiting in consciousness or the mind and not in an extra-mental world.

If you write, if you paint, dance, sing, sculpt, draw, drum, if you play an instrument, decorate your home, arrange flowers, grow a garden, take photographs, build websites, or if you listen carefully when other speak and then speak your truth with compassion, you are living creatively.

We all have the capacity to be creative: this is our common birthright and our unifying pathway to the divine.
